Keisha Assivero, also known as “Special K”, is the co-host of the Caribbean Flavour show on CHUO 89.1FM in Ottawa.
As a teenager, Keisha moved from Jamaica to Canada. In school, she studied Business Accounting and hung out at CKCU, the student-led radio station. Keisha describes “the WOW factor” when radio hosts would let her see the magic of show production. At that time, she noticed that there weren’t a lot of Black women working in radio. Keisha wanted to help provide a voice to the voiceless.
When an opportunity arose at CHUO, Keisha submitted a proposal for a soca music show with her then-boyfriend-now-husband, Mikey Wizdom. That was 24 years ago, and Caribbean Flavour is still going strong. As Special K, she also guest hosts other popular shows like Rockers, Heart Beat Café, and Vintage Love.
Keisha works full-time as a Senior Accountant and she and her husband have three amazing sons. She also loves cooking, exploring places, and graphic design. When it comes to balancing work, radio, family, community, and her own interests, Keisha says, “I believe that we are not given more than we can handle. We have to remember to smile, exhale, and see the positive.”
